Teaching Assistants: Miss Radford & Miss Arapu

Welcome to Year 5 and to Grey-Thompson Class!

Tanni Grey-Thompson.pngOur class is named after Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson, who is one of Britain’s greatest ever Paralympic athletes. She amassed a remarkable medal haul over 16 years and five Paralympic Games of 11 gold, 4 silver and a bronze. Tanni was born on 26th July 1969, with a medical condition called spina bifida and used a wheel chair from the age of seven. Her sporting achievements and success have raised the profile of Paralympic sport and have helped change people’s attitudes towards disability.

“Anything is possible. Part of it is how much you want to do it. Some people achieve success very easily, but that's a tiny percentage of people. For the majority of people, it's about working hard.”

Important Information:

  • We would like the children to read as much as possible and encourage you to enjoy reading with your child at home. This can be any form of reading: online Bug Club books, school reading books, comics, stories, newspapers, library books etc. The date started and completed, book title and comment about the book should be entered by your child. Please check your child’s reading record on a weekly basis and sign/comment if you read with your child. Remember, each recorded read counts towards the 100 reads awards.
  • Weekly spellings will be sent home on Fridays and will be tested the following Thursday. Spellings can be accessed and practised via Spelling Shed.
  • Children will be set a piece of homework each half-term to promote their learning and creativity in history, geography, science or R.E. This will be allocated on Seesaw with suggested activities. It should be returned in the final week of each half term.
  • Please encourage your child to continue using Times Tables Rock Stars. Being able to recall multiplication facts at speed will obviously help with multiplication and division calculations and also with work on fractions, decimals and percentages.
  • Children are expected to come to school dressed in their PE kit on their designated days (white t-shirt, black shorts/joggers and black pumps/trainers). If your child wears earrings, we ask that these are removed before they come to school on these days.
  • Grey-Thompson Class will partake in swimming as one of their PE activities each week from after February half term until the end of the academic year.
  • Named water bottles should be brought into school each day and the children will be reminded each afternoon to take them home to wash and refill them.
  • Fruit can be brought to school to be consumed during morning break.
  • Please ensure sun-cream is applied at home and sent to school for your child to reapply at lunch time when it is hot and sunny.
  • Class fund would be greatly appreciated and can now be sent to school via ParentPay. These donations go towards extra food items for taste testing or cooking and any consumable extras we need to purchase.
  • Please ensure all of your children’s personal items are labelled: uniform, PE kit, lunch boxes, water bottles, coats, bags etc.

We hope that your child has a fantastic time in Year 5.
