Physical Education

Intent

It is our intent at South Failsworth Primary to make PE an integral part of our curriculum and provide a safe and supportive environment for all children to flourish in a range of different physical activities. By offering a varied, dynamic and progressive PE curriculum using the GetSet4PE scheme of work, we strive to create a culture that aims to inspire and motivate children to be active and enjoy PE and sport. This will assist them in becoming more physically confident and competent, as well as fulfill our vision of 'Inspiring and creating lifelong learners.’ It is our aim to deliver high quality teaching and learning opportunities that fosters a love of learning and gives all children the opportunity to reach their potential. However, we also want to teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others as part of an effective team, understanding fairness and sportsmanship to instil life-long values. We intend to use Manchester City in the Community coaches to work alongside staff in delivering high-quality PE sessions that will ensure all of the above intentions are implemented and achieved while also upskilling school practitioners. Within school, we also see the importance of creating sport leaders, and therefore aim to give as many children as possible the opportunity to organise and lead sporting games and activities during break times, lunch times and PE lessons. It is our intention that all pupils have the opportunity to attend swimming lessons and we aspire for all children to leave South Failsworth being able to swim at least 25 metres.

Implementation

Pupils at South Failsworth Primary participate in at least two high-quality PE and sporting activities a week. Our progressive PE curriculum ensures children are developing a broader range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways and to link them to make actions and sequences of movement. Within these sessions, children will build confidence and determination while learning the fundamental values of sport. Throughout the year, many pupils take part in non-competitive and competitive sporting events with local schools and beyond, including football, cross country, dodgeball and multi skills. Pupils from Year 1 to Year 6 will also receive high quality dance sessions from a specialist dance instructor, which will finish with ½ termly performances for parents. Sports Leaders from Key Stage 2 will also be changed termly in order to give different children the opportunity. Finally, all children in school will have the opportunity to attend swimming lessons in order to reach the desired outcome of swimming at least 25 metres.

Impact

As the curriculum is progressive, it allows children to develop fundamental skills and apply them to a variety of sports and activities, thus giving them opportunities to demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best. Our pupils are physically active and take part in a range of sports and this has positive implications on their learning in the classroom. Children at South Failsworth understand how to lead a healthy lifestyle and understand the importance of exercise.  Children enjoy PE and develop a love of sport, and physical activity, that they pursue outside of school and in future life outside of primary school. All pupils understand the values of sport and importance of fairness and sportsmanship. Year 6 pupils leave school with the skills to self-rescue in the water and swim 25 metres competently. The impact of our intentions will be monitored through observation, children’s voices and assessment procedures.
