Design Technology

Intent

At South Failsworth Primary School we intend to deliver a design technology curriculum which encompasses appropriate subject knowledge, skills and understanding as set out in the National Curriculum Design Technology Programmes of study. We aim to provide children with a DT education that is relevant in our rapidly changing world.  Our DT curriculum provides children with opportunities to research, represent their ideas, explore and investigate, develop their ideas, make a product and evaluate their work. Children will be given the opportunity to solve problems, work cooperatively and independently. We intend for all children to work with a range of media including food, textiles and mechanics.

Implementation

The Design Technology National Curriculum and EYFS is planned for and covered in full within the EYFS, KS1 and KS2 school curriculum. Key skills and key knowledge for Design and Technology have been mapped across the school to ensure progression between year groups.

  • Children design products with a purpose in mind and an intended user of the products. Children are able to make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts
  • When creating a product children will follow the design process: research, design, make and evaluate.
  • A range of skills will be taught ensuring that children are aware of health and safety issues related to the tasks undertaken
  • Clear and appropriate cross curricular links to underpin learning in multiple areas across the curriculum, giving children the opportunities to learn life skills and apply skills to ‘hands on’ situations in a purposeful context.
  • Each stage should be rooted in technical knowledge

The aspects of Design Technology we teach the children are: sewing and textiles, cooking and nutrition, electrical and mechanical components and using materials.

Impact

Our unique DT Curriculum aims to provide children with opportunities and experiences that will equip them with the skills and knowledge outlined in the DT National Curriculum. As designers, children will develop skills and attributes they can use beyond school and into adulthood. In addition, we measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods: reflection on standards achieved against the planned outcomes and pupil discussions about their learning. Design Technology is also monitored by the subject leader throughout the year in the form of book monitoring, looking at outcomes and pupil interviews to discuss their learning and understanding and establish the impact of the teaching taking place.
